Finishing active treatment is a great feeling, and your retainer is the tool that protects all that work. Teeth naturally want to drift over time, so wearing and caring for your retainer is what keeps your smile looking the way it does on the day your braces or aligners come off. The habits are simple once they become routine.
How often to wear it
Right after treatment, we will give you a wear schedule based on your teeth. Many patients start by wearing their retainer full time for a stretch, then move to nights only. Our team's honest advice is to plan on wearing it at night for the long term. Teeth can shift at any age, and a nightly retainer is a small habit that protects years of work. If your retainer ever starts to feel tight, that is a sign your teeth are trying to move, so wear it more and give us a call.
Keeping it clean
A retainer picks up plaque and bacteria just like your teeth do, so clean it every day:
- Gently brush it with a soft toothbrush and cool water each time you take it out
- Use a mild soap rather than hot water, which can warp the plastic
- Skip whitening toothpaste, which is abrasive and can scratch the surface
- Soak it occasionally with a retainer or denture cleaner, never in hot or boiling water
A clean retainer stays clear and fresh and lasts longer.
Storing it safely
The single most common way retainers get lost or broken is being wrapped in a napkin and thrown away, so never set yours down in a tissue or paper towel. When it is not in your mouth, it belongs in its case, every time. Keep it away from pets, who love to chew them, and out of hot cars, which can distort the plastic. A little consistency here saves a lot of trouble.
Replacements and keeping your result
Retainers do not last forever. Over time they can wear down, crack, or no longer fit as well, and that is normal. If yours is damaged, does not fit, or goes missing, call us sooner rather than later so your teeth do not have a chance to shift while you are without it. We can check the fit and make a replacement, and flexible monthly payment plans are available if you need them.
Take care of your retainer, and it will take care of your smile. If you have questions about your wear schedule or need a replacement, request a visit and our team is happy to help.
