Clear Aligners vs Braces: How to Choose

Clear aligners and braces both straighten teeth well. The right choice depends on your bite, your habits, and your goals. Here is how to weigh it.

Straightening your teeth is one of the most rewarding things you can do for both your confidence and your long-term oral health. Aligned teeth are easier to clean, and a balanced bite puts less stress on your teeth and jaw over time. The question most patients ask us is simple: should I choose clear aligners or traditional braces?

Both move teeth predictably. The better question is which one fits your life and your bite.

How each one works

Traditional braces use small brackets bonded to your teeth and connected by wires that we adjust at each visit. They are fixed in place, so they are always working, and we control the movement of each tooth with real precision.

Clear aligners are a series of custom-made, see-through trays that fit over your teeth. Every week or two you move to the next tray in the series, and your teeth shift gradually into place. Aligners are removable, so you take them out to eat, brush, and floss.

Where clear aligners shine

For many adults and teens, aligners are appealing because they are:

  • Clear and easy to wear without drawing attention
  • Removable, so you eat what you like and keep your normal brushing routine
  • Usually comfortable, with no brackets or wires to rub against your cheeks
  • Predictable, since we can show you a preview of your projected result before you begin

The tradeoff is consistency. Aligners only move teeth when you wear them, ideally around 22 hours a day. If you are confident you will keep them in, aligners are an excellent option.

Where braces still have the edge

As an orthodontist, our team recommends braces for certain cases, particularly more complex bite corrections, significant rotations, or teeth that need to move a long distance. Because braces are fixed, they also take the daily decision out of your hands, which helps younger patients who might set aligners down and forget them.

How we help you decide

At your free consultation, we take digital photos and a quick 3D scan, then walk through your goals, your daily routine, and what would fit best. There is no single right answer, only the right answer for you. We give you an honest recommendation, a clear timeline, and an estimate, and flexible monthly payment plans are available if that helps. You decide from there.
