Parents often ask us when the right time is to bring a child in, and it is usually earlier than they expect. The American Association of Orthodontists suggests that children have their first orthodontic check by around age 7. That may sound young, but an early look is one of the most useful visits we offer, and for most kids it does not lead to treatment at all.
Why age 7
By about age 7, a child has a mix of baby and permanent teeth, and the jaw is still growing. That combination lets our team see how the bite is developing while there is still plenty of time to guide it if needed. We can spot patterns early, such as crowding, a crossbite, or how the upper and lower teeth are meeting, long before they become harder to address.
An early visit is not a push toward braces. It is simply the best time to gather information.
Most kids just get monitored
Here is the part that surprises many families: for the large majority of children, the first visit ends with a plan to watch and wait. We call this monitoring, and it is a good outcome. If everything is developing well, we will see your child periodically, at no cost during our growth-and-guidance checks, and step in only when the timing is right.
Watchful waiting means we track your child's growth over time so that if treatment is ever needed, it begins at the ideal moment, not too early and not too late.
When early treatment does make sense
A smaller number of children benefit from early, or Phase 1, treatment while they are still growing. Our team may recommend it when we see things like:
- A crossbite that affects how the jaw grows
- Severe crowding that leaves no room for permanent teeth
- A significant overbite or underbite
- Habits such as prolonged thumb sucking affecting the bite
- Front teeth that stick out and are at higher risk of injury
When early treatment is truly needed, acting during growth can make later treatment simpler or, in some cases, unnecessary. When it is not needed, we will say so plainly.
The visit itself is easy
A first check is relaxed and kid-friendly. We take a few digital photos, do a gentle exam, and talk with you about what we see. The consultation is free, and you do not need a referral from your dentist to come in.
If your child is around age 7, or an older sibling never had that first check, it is a good time to schedule. Request a free consultation and our team will walk you through what we find.
